Fishing in southern Arizona is a hobby that can be enjoyed year round. Fish can be caught in local ponds and lakes fed by the Colorado River, and along with the Colorado River itself.

The state of Arizona requires all fishermen over the age of 14 to have a fishing license. You can pick those up here at our local MCX in the firearms department. If you plan to fish along the banks of the river in California, you will need to obtain a Colorado River stamp. Those can also be acquired through our Yuma MCX.

The locals and visitors take pleasure in fishing these favorite areas:

  • Martinez Lake - A resort area that is located 39 miles north of MCAS Yuma, near Castle Dome Landing. MCCS Yuma offers a recreational area along with cabin rentals, park models and RV spaces for rent. This area is a favorite among local fisherman.
  • Fortuna Pond - Located 1.5 miles north of Highway 95. On Laguna Dam Road there is a canal levee road that leads 3.3 miles east to Fortuna Pond. According to Arizona Game & Fish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, mullet and carp can be caught throughout this pond.
  • West Wetlands Regional Park - This area is great for the whole family. This facility offers multiple parks, a boat launch, and a recreational area. The pond located within the park is 15 feet deep at the center and is regularly stocked with game fish. A perfect spot for teaching young ones the basics of fishing.
  • Redondo Pond - Located 1.5 miles east of Laguna Dam Road on County 6th Street. Inhabited by largemouth bass and redear sunfish.
  • Mittry Lake Wildlife Area - Located at the south end of Mittry Lake. Take AZ Hwy 95 to Avenue 7E, proceed north to end of the pavement. Begins about ½ mile past end of pavement. The most common species encountered in Mittry Lake are largemouth bass, flathead and channel catfish, bluegill, tilapia, crappie and carp.

  • Ferguson Lake - Accessible by boat, upstream of Martinez Lake at mile 57.5 of the Colorado River. Great fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, walleye and crappie.
